Love Your Nanny and Want to Keep Them? Do These Two Things.

Written By: Jami Dennis

At ABC Nannies, we believe in not only providing exceptional nannies for Colorado families, but also fostering meaningful, long-lasting relationships between the two. Did you know feeling unseen and under appreciated are the main reasons nannies cite when leaving a job? Caring for little ones on a daily basis, especially someone else’s children, is a big commitment. It takes hard work, patience, resilience and lots of heart. And from the employer’s perspective, it requires more than financial compensation, no matter how competitive, to keep your nanny happy.

As a former nanny employer of nearly a decade, I learned early on the importance of recognizing my employee’s hard work and showing gratitude as often as possible. Both were key to maintaining their happiness, ensuring harmony in our home and long-term retention. National Nanny Appreciation Week (NNRW) – celebrated the last week of September annually – is the perfect time to start! Whether it’s a thoughtful gift, a day off with pay, or a heartfelt note from you and your children, providing timely recognition and showing genuine appreciation is motivating.

The Importance of Recognizing Your Nanny

First, let’s start with recognition. Recognizing your nanny’s contributions is essential to building a positive, long-lasting working relationship. As the employer, you should regularly offer positive feedback on your employee’s hard work and professional achievements. My advice, compliment your nanny three times as often as you correct or criticize them.

Try rewarding your nanny with a small bonus or a paid day off after a particularly challenging time in life or for helping your child reach a big milestone. Express your gratitude by saying “Thank you for _X_. You are awesome!” when your nanny goes above and beyond on the job. You may be surprised how a few kind words will boost their morale and happiness. A handwritten, thoughtful note (or even a text) of appreciation for everything they do goes a long way, too. Thank them for the positive impact they’ve had on your family and provide examples. And don’t forget: to ensure your recognition is impactful, make it timely and heartfelt.

Show Your Nanny How Grateful You Are

My second piece of advice is to work gratitude and appreciation into your employer repertoire. Show your nanny you value them as an integral member of your family, and do so often. Make sure they know you appreciate them not only for the tasks they complete or the things they do, but also for who they are as a person. Let them know you appreciate the energy, consistency and care they bring to your home.

A big way you, as a household employer, can show your appreciation is to respect your employee’s personal time. Encourage them to take time for themselves – to rest and recharge. Avoid contacting them with requests during their off days. By respecting their personal life, it shows you value their overall well-being. Another way is to acknowledge specific qualities you value and appreciate in your nanny. And then, of course, be sure to celebrate your nanny’s birthday or work anniversary with kind words and a personalized, generous gift to show you care. Lastly, don’t forget to invite your nanny to join in special family events or occasions. Make them feel truly valued by inviting them to you child’s birthday party, as a guest, and a valued member of your parenting team.

Invest in Your Family’s Well-Being

Timely recognition and true gratitude are more than tactics to keep your nanny long-term, consider them an investment in your family’s well-being. When done consistently, they’ll lead to improved job satisfaction for your nanny, higher quality care for your children, increased loyalty and a more harmonious home. Every gesture, no matter how small, matters. Start today.
