What Does a Nanny Do?

Written By: Jami Dennis

Nannies provide personalized care for, and oversee the safety and well-being of, children in their home environment. They engage children in activities that foster learning and development, and typically  assist with child-related household duties.

  1. What Does a Nanny Do?
  2. What Are the Responsibilities of a Nanny?
  3. What Are the Benefits of Hiring a Nanny?

1) What Does a Nanny Do?

A nanny’s primary responsibility is to  work exclusively with a family (sometimes two, as part of a nanny share) to provide consistent childcare.. A nanny is a nurturing presence, fostering children’s development through connection, learning and play.

While their main duty is childcare, most professional  nannies take on additional child-related household tasks. For instance, they may prepare meals for the children, help with homework, and tidy up at the end of the day.

But keep in mind that  a nanny is not a housekeeper, personal shopper, private teacher, chauffeur, errand runner, or cleaning service. If or when you hire a nanny, any additional duties outside of those related to the children must be mutually agreed upon as part of the job description.

2) What Are the Responsibilities Of a Nanny?

During the workday, your nanny will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Supervising and Managing Daily Routines: Overseeing meals, naps, playtime, and activities on a consistent schedule.
  • Emotional Support and Safety: Providing a supportive, nurturing presence and keeping the children safe at all times.
  • Educational and  Developmental Activities: Engaging children in learning experiences, creative play, and physical activities that promote cognitive, emotional, and social growth.
  • Light Household Assistance: Handling child-related tasks such as doing the children’s laundry, loading/emptying the dishwasher, tidying play areas, preparing the children’s meals and cleaning up after meals.,
  • Transportation & Errands: Driving children to and from school, extracurricular activities, and appointments.

Full-time nannies handle the bulk of daily childcare needs, while part-time nannies provide extra support during key periods such as 2-3 shorter days a week while the parents work or even after school. .

3) What Are the Benefits Of Hiring a Nanny?

Hiring a nanny is about more than just childcare – it’s about elevating your entire family’s quality of life. With a nanny, your child receives personalized care tailored to their developmental needs, ensuring they grow and thrive in a nurturing environment. Unlike daycares, a nanny provides one-on-one attention, custom learning experiences, and a consistent routine based on their age/needs/timing that fosters emotional security and confidence.

For parents, a nanny offers more than just peace of mind, they help restore balance to your busy life. From managing school drop-offs to preparing children’s meals to keeping the household running smoothly, a professional nanny allows you the time and space to focus on your career, personal well-being, and, in the end, ensures you have more quality time with your family. With the trusted support of a nanny, your family can enjoy a calmer, more connected home life.
