What is a night nurse?

Written By: Jami Dennis

A night nurse is an old-fashioned term for a caregiver who provides overnight care for infants. The modern-day alternative is a night nanny or Newborn Care Specialist; these  experienced and trained caregivers take care of your baby, or babies -if you are the parent of multiples, overnight.

1) What is a night nurse?

Night nurse is a historic term for a caregiver who provided overnight care for newborns and their mothers. The role of a night nurse included not only assisting with baby care, such as feedings, diaper changes, and soothing, but also offering medical advice, monitoring the health of the infant, and providing post-birth care for the motherHistorically, night nurses were medical professionals employed by wealthier households of a higher social status.  (redunant as it’s covered, in length, in the next section.

2) What is the difference between a night nurse and a night nanny?

Historically, the role of a night nurse- was primarily focused on meeting the physical and medical needs of the mother and baby. In contrast, the modern-day night nanny instead focuses on fostering healthy feeding and sleeping habits, soothing techniques, and creating a consistent nighttime routine for the infant.

Night nannies bring a holistic, collaborative, and practical approach to caring for infants through the night, while a night nurse was traditionally perceived as a more authoritative role aligned with medical and health-related responsibilities. While the term ‘night nurse’ is still used colloquially, it has largely been replaced with modern alternatives, like night nannies or Newborn Care Specialists. This change in terminology reflects a shift in how overnight childcare is now viewed by parents as a supportive service that complements rather than overshadows their parenting role.

While a night nurse’s role would involve providing hands-on medical care and guidance, a night nanny is more concerned with emotional and practical support for the parents. For example, night nannies often work closely with parents to teach them techniques for soothing their babiesand encouraging better sleep patterns. They also provide valuable assistance with challenges parents may face during the night, such as bottle-feeding or managing multiple night wakings.
