Family and Household Dynamics

A peek behind the front door...

Children's Ages: Care will be for one school-aged child, who is almost 11 years old.
About the Children:

This creative and active almost 11-year-old loves music and currently enjoys guitar and piano while also beginning to explore flute and ukulele. She loves arts and crafts, soccer, climbing, baking and spending quality time with her caregiver. During the school year, she begins school at 7:50 a.m., with Mom handling morning drop-off. The Family Assistant will typically pick her up from school at approximately 2:50 p.m. After school, the Family Assistant will help with homework, activities and everyday responsibilities while also making time for fun and connection through baking, crafts, music and other interests.

About the Family:
  • This is a single-mom household, and Mom is looking for a Family Assistant who can truly become her right hand in keeping both the household and family schedule running smoothly.
  • While Mom has a demanding career and is often very focused and "in the zone" during the workday, the atmosphere at home is generally casual, relaxed and down-to-earth. She would love someone who is comfortable working independently during the day and who can naturally transition into the more relaxed rhythm of the household.
About the Pets:
  • No pets live in the home
Additional Notes:
  • Their current Family Assistant has set a wonderful precedent by anticipating needs before being asked, staying on top of school and household responsibilities and consistently noticing where she can step in and help. Mom described the "magic" she brought to the household as her ability to know what was needed before Mom even realized she needed it.

Key Responsibilities

A day in the life...

Standard Duties:
  • Family Assistant responsibilities will include errands, grocery shopping, package returns, scheduling appointments, school supplies, researching and coordinating camps/activities, meal planning with Mom and weekly meal/dinner prep.
  • The family has a housekeeper for all deep cleaning. The FA will help maintain the home between cleanings with dishes, garbage/recycling, linens, folding and putting away laundry and keeping the child's room, toys and belongings organized.
  • Childcare responsibilities include school pickup, homework help, transportation to soccer and climbing, engaging in activities such as baking and crafts and supporting age-appropriate independence, learning and emotional development.
  • Above all, Mom is looking for someone who can see a need and fill it rather than waiting for a detailed daily task list.
Travel Requirements:
  • No regular travel is required for this position.

Desired Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following qualifications…

  • 2+ years of professional experience with school-aged children as well as previous Family Assistant experience, with a strong FA reference.
  • The ideal candidate will be proactive, organized, self-directed and genuinely enjoy the household-support side of a Family Assistant role. Previous experience with errands, groceries, meal prep, laundry, calendars and general family organization is important.
  • Knowledge of child development is highly valued. College experience, child development coursework or a strong understanding of child development would be a big perk but is not required.
  • The family is looking for someone loving, patient and emotionally aware who can support a school-aged child with homework, independence, everyday responsibilities and occasional anxiety while being sensitive to the dynamics of transitioning between two parents' homes.
  • The ideal candidate will be collaborative and communicative with Mom while also confident working independently. Flexibility, professionalism and the ability to anticipate what a busy household needs will be key to success in this role.
